Hospital Volunteering

While at school, I spent several hours a week at McCullough-Hyde Hospital working with patients providing quality care, assisting patients’ family members, supporting various administrative departments, and working with the nurses themselves. I spent two semesters working in the Obstetrics Department, and two semesters in the Emergency Department. Throughout my overall time I had the opportunity to interact with patients from all different backgrounds and demographics.

With Miami's Club Swim Team, I had had the ability to continue to pursue my passion for swimming competitively. The team attends 3-4 meets per semester all across the country. I competed at the 2023 National Club Swim meet and placed 5th overall in the 50-yard butterfly and and was a finalist in several events at the 2024 National Club Swim meet. The team was a wonderful way to meet people at other universities all while continuing to do something I love. In addition, training for competitions without a formal coach or mandatory attendance is something that forced me to develop an extreme sense of self motivation.

In Miami's Pre-Dentistry Club, I had the opportunity to learn more about daily life in a variety of dental professions thanks to panels of active professionals. In addition, we hosted admission representatives from local dental schools and went on visits to tour the facilities. We also had the opportunity to host local dentists for question and answer sessions and hold workshops to practice using classic dental instruments.

Dentistry Life is a community of MEDLIFE, an organization that partners with communities in Latin America and Africa to improve access to medicine and education. In Dentistry Life, we focused on educating and providing access to oral care and oral hygiene in underprivileged communities in our more immediate area through fundraisers, drives, and active volunteer work.

Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati

I was first introduced to DSAGC via an internship through my Hispanics in Healthcare Spanish class. DSAGC is focused on empowering individuals with Down Syndrome and their family through education, community support, and inspiration. I had the opportunity to help support this mission at in house organization events and various community events working directly with families and their children. Unfortunately, the organization lacks Spanish speaking staff, making their services virtually inaccessible for families that speak little to no English. I worked directly with these families to help interpret and translate the information being provided and help guide them through the activities. In addition, myself and a couple other students worked to translate their website into Spanish to make it more easily accessible for these families and to make sure this great organization can help more people.

I volunteer weekly at the local animal shelter in Hamilton, Ohio. After several stages of training, as a volunteer, I had the opportunity to provide vital care and love to the dogs and cats at the shelter through socialization, training, and play. There is also an emphasis on the preparation of the dogs for adoptability through the development of improved eye contact, calmness, and obedience. As wonderful as it is to interact with the animals themselves, as volunteers, we had the opportunity to participate in a lot of the behind-the-scenes work by preparing equipment and supplies.

Over breaks back home, I enjoy spending some of my free time at the Dekalb Humane Society working with the dogs and cats. I love providing the dogs a chance to take a walk and play outside, as well as a chance for socialization. I also enjoy helping to brush the dogs and cats and providing them active play time. In addition, I help with the sanitization of cages, rooms, and other equipment (i.e. food bowls, litterboxes, etc.).

Big Brothers Big Sisters

January 2023-May 2024

During the school year, I worked with the Butler County division of BBBS. In January 2023, a young girl and I were paired up to be a “little” and a “big.” Each week during the school year, we met at her elementary school, where we worked on her homework, read books, played games, did crafts, and giggled along to each other's jokes. Since the day we were matched, we developed a very close-knit relationship. Our weekly time together was something we both looked forward to and deeply cherished. I loved getting to see how much she had developed and matured during our time together, and I was even more shocked at how the experience broadened my own perspectives. Our time together is something I have missed after graduation, but I plan to continue my association with BBBS and mentoring for the rest of my life.
